Garden SuppliesOnce you decide to grow a garden in your backyard, you will need to get some supplies. Some of these include soil, fertilizer, plants and various gardening tools. Most gardens don’t start out with the best soil. You will most likely have to till the area that you want to make into your garden, add topsoil, compost and fertilizer to prepare it for planting. Check with your local nursery to see what type of soil the plants you are using like. If you have the time, you can even have your soil professionally tested to see what nutrients it is lacking. Once the ground is prepared, you will want to buy your plants. Look for plants that will grow well in your zone as described in seed catalogues or by professionals at your local nursery. Try to group several of the same plant together. This will give you maximum effect and will actually look like you have more plants. When planting, make sure the hole is big enough for the roots to have room to grow and water the plant well. Of course, in order to do all of this tilling and planting you’re going to need some tools. Firstly, you will need a shovel to mix the soil and dig the holes for the plants. You can also buy various kinds of soil mixers at your local hardware store. Some even attach to your cordless drill to make the job even easier. You may also want a wheelbarrow or other type of garden cart to transport all of your of heavy soil and plants around the yard. Once the plants are in the ground you will need a garden hose or watering can within easy reach to water them.
